I just finished the most charming novellas. Helene Hanff's 84, Charing Cross Road and The Duchess of Bloomsbury. This woman simply published her letters and journal entries containing everyday life events AND it's interesting!!!! I think this is the sign of a truly great writer.
There was no heartbreaking romance, no affair, intrigue, or murder. It was simply the everyday quotidian so charmingly written that the reader wanted to read on. It made me want to face my own daily struggle with Helene's slightly adventurous spirit and apply her humorous sensibility to my own dilemmas. After all, so many of life's challenges seem the same. New characters, sometimes new dilemmas, but so many of the same feelings, fears, and obstacles to overcome. Here is an average woman with an average story, remarkably told!
